Explore the Natural Beauty of Iowa in American Truck Simulator

The Iowa map expansion is one of the most anticipated upcoming DLCs for American Truck Simulator. Now, it’s time to share an update on its development and showcase the stunning natural landscapes that make the Hawkeye State unique.

A Diverse Midwestern Landscape

Iowa sits in the upper Midwest, bridging the lush forests of the east and the expansive grasslands of the prairie plains to the west. The DLC’s map lead, Saimon, described the state’s scenery after a 2023 research trip:

“The first thing that caught our attention were the expansive hills with terraced fields, picturesque farms with round silos, and countless wind turbines on the horizon.”

To capture Iowa’s beauty, SCS Software has introduced new flower assets, enhancing the countryside with vibrant native flora. These additions reflect the state’s strong environmental efforts to preserve local plants and grasses.

The Influence of Ice and Agriculture

Iowa’s rolling hills and flat plains were shaped by massive ice sheets that melted around 13,000 years ago. The state’s elevation gradually rises from southeast to northwest, with its highest point, Hawkeye Point, standing at 511 meters.

The Mississippi River plays a vital role in Iowa’s geography, forming the entire eastern border. With over 90% of the land dedicated to agriculture—primarily corn, soy, and hay—Iowa rightfully earns its title as the Corn State. In fact, it leads the nation in corn and soybean production, making trucking an essential part of the region’s economy.

Forests and Landmarks

Although Iowa is mostly farmland, around 8% of the state remains covered by forests. These woodlands fall into three main categories:

  • Upland Hardwoods – Found in elevated areas with well-drained soils.
  • Oak Savannah – A transition between upland and bottomland forests.
  • Bottomland Hardwoods – Located near water sources with wet soil conditions.

Truckers can also expect to see notable landmarks on their routes. One of these is the famous Tree in the Road, a well-known natural feature near I-80 between Omaha and Des Moines.
